Promoting Research, Inspiring Dental Education

The dental unit of the Taipei Imperial University-affiliated hospital (the predecessor of National Taiwan University Hospital) was established in 1910, serving as the forerunner of the Department of Dentistry at National Taiwan University. In 1953, the Department of Dentistry was officially founded, with Professor Shui Kuo appointed as its first chair. The department began admitting its first cohort of undergraduate dental students in 1955.

Through the joint efforts of successive department chairs and faculty members, the Graduate Institute of Dental Science was established in 1988 to offer a master’s program, followed by the addition of a Ph.D. program in 1991. In 1996, the institute was formally renamed the Graduate Institute of Clinical Dentistry. To promote basic research in oral medicine and jointly fulfill the educational mission alongside the Department of Dentistry and the Graduate Institute of Clinical Dentistry, the Graduate Institute of Oral Biology was established in 1997 with a master's program, and it began offering a Ph.D. program in 2013.

On June 14, 2008, following the resolution passed at the University Affairs Meeting, the School of Dentistry was officially established by integrating the Department of Dentistry and the two graduate institutes. Professor Chun-Pin Lin served as the first dean of the School of Dentistry. He was succeeded by Professor Chun-Pin Chiang as the second dean in 2014, followed by Professor Li-Deh Lin as the third dean in 2017. In 2023, Professor Bo-Shiunn Lee served as the fourth and current dean.
