Introduction to the Digital Dental Skill Training Center
Advancements in computer, optical, and internet technologies in the 21st century have brought about profound changes in our way of life. The close integration of modern dental treatment and digital technology is flourishing. In light of this, with the support of the Southern Taiwan Science Park Bureau under the National Science and Technology Council, the National Taiwan University School of Dentistry officially established the Digital Dental Skill Training Center on December 13, 2019.
The Center was initiated and implemented under the Southern Taiwan Smart Biomedical Industry Cluster Promotion Program led by the Southern Taiwan Science Park Bureau. In 2019, the NTU School of Dentistry proposed the Digital Dentistry Education Integration with Southern Taiwan Science Park Products Implementation Program, followed in 2020 by a continuation of the same program, and in 2021 by the Southern Taiwan Science Park Products Dental Digital Treatment and Precision Medicine Education R&D Program. Unlike past initiatives from other organizations, which focused on establishing product experience centers for practicing dentists, the NTU Digital Dental Skill Training Center aims to build a complete training system—from dental students, to specialty trainees, to practicing dentists. The goal is to enable domestic dentists to become familiar with and apply domestically developed software and hardware equipment in clinical practice. We believe that only by introducing dental students to digital treatment and MIT (Made in Taiwan) products during their education can they truly acquire digital treatment skills, build trust in domestic products, and be willing to use them after graduation in their clinical practice.
Furthermore, as a teaching and research hub, the Center seeks to assist domestic manufacturers in further product development and integration. With NTU holding a leading position in Taiwan’s dental field and a solid presence internationally, the establishment of the NTU Digital Dental Skill Training Center is expected to strengthen the global standing of Taiwan’s MIT products in the dental market. Through a comprehensive education and training system, dentists will be well-equipped to competently perform digital dental treatments, offering the public more comprehensive and precise oral care.
The establishment of the Center will not only contribute to the Department of Dentistry at NTU Hospital in developing related treatment technologies but will also collaborate with overseas educational and research institutions in the future. Foreign dentists will have the opportunity to receive training in the use of Southern Taiwan Science Park products in Taiwan, and the Center will also assist manufacturers in providing similar training abroad, promoting these products internationally.
